In the heart of Western New York lies a charming village that often flies under the radar of travelers. Perry, NY, a hidden gem nestled in Wyoming County, is a place where rich history, small-town charm, and natural beauty converge. Join me in exploring this picturesque town that I call home, and discover why Perry is worth a visit.
A Glimpse into Perry’s History:
Perry boasts a fascinating history that dates back to the early 19th century. Established in 1814, the village was named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, a notable figure from the War of 1812. Perry’s historic district is a testament to its heritage, with beautifully preserved homes and buildings that give visitors a sense of stepping back in time.
Dell Collective has recently purchased a building on main street that dates back to circa 1866! Our building started as a Harness shop in 1866, became a Jeweler shop in the 1890’s and then became a liquor store for 50+ years in the 1900’s. More recently, the building was a beauty parlor and we intend to create an additional Dell Collective space to be enjoyed by travelers for many years to come!
Charming Main Street:
Perry’s Main Street is the epitome of small-town America, with its quaint shops, beautiful street scapes, and friendly locals. Strolling along the charming sidewalks, you’ll find a variety of shops offering unique gifts, books and fresh bakery goods. Don’t miss the Perry Farmers’ Market, where you can sample fresh, local produce, live music, and connect with the friendly locals. Some of my favorite Main Street shops include Butter Meat Co., Eleven Covington & the charming book store! You can grab a sweet treat at For the Love of Flour bakery, or an afternoon beverage at Silver Lake Brewing Project or Ration Wine Bar!
Letchworth State Park Proximity:
One of Perry’s most significant advantages is its proximity to Letchworth State Park, known as the “Grand Canyon of the East.” Just a short drive away, the park offers stunning natural beauty, including waterfalls, deep gorges, and miles of hiking trails. Perry serves as an excellent gateway for those looking to explore the wonders of this natural wonderland.
Outdoor Recreation:
Perry itself offers a range of outdoor activities. Silver Lake, located nearby, is a favorite spot for boating, fishing, and picnicking. Visit Perry Public beach for the best lake access and picnic areas and a possible spotting of the Silver Lake Sea Serpent. Perry’s rolling hills and scenic countryside provide an ideal backdrop for hiking and cycling. Don’t forget to explore the Silver Lake Trail, a picturesque path that winds around Perry. Dell Collective offers a convenient e-bike rental option if you decide to spend some time exploring the trail.
Local Flavors:
One of the highlights of any visit to Perry is savoring the local cuisine. The village is home to cozy diners and restaurants serving homestyle dishes. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty breakfast, a classic diner burger, or a taste of authentic New York pizza, Perry has you covered.
If you prefer something a bit more refined, we recommend checking out Ration Wine bar for appetizers, dessert or Sunday Brunch.
Just outside of town, you can visit East Hill Creamery, Burley Berries, Pa’s Produce or Degroff’s Sweetcorn for bountiful local produce and dairy products! Check the hours before visiting, as some may be seasonal.
Festivals and Events:
Perry truly comes alive during its annual festivals and events. The Perry Chalk Art Festival in July, for instance, showcases incredible sidewalk art creations, and the Letchworth Arts & Crafts Show in October features a variety of handcrafted goods from talented artisans. Be sure to check the local event calendar when planning your visit.
