Letchworth State Park · Perry & Portageville, New York

The gorge turns first.

Letchworth holds 66 miles of trail and three waterfalls, and for a few weeks every autumn the walls of the gorge go red end to end. Our four stays sit minutes from the park gates, which is the entire reason to book this side of the state in October.

The season

Color runs the first half of October most years.

It moves with the weather, so nobody can promise you a Saturday. What holds every year is the order things happen in, and the fact that the good weekends go before the forecast is out.

What the park does

  1. Early autumnThe first turn starts at the rim while the valley is still green. Trails are empty, mornings are cold, afternoons are warm enough for shirtsleeves.
  2. Peak colorRoughly the first two weeks of October in a normal year. The gorge walls go at once and the falls overlooks get busy by mid morning.
  3. Late autumnLeaves come down, sightlines open up, and you can see the gorge structure the canopy hides all summer. The quietest good weeks of the year.

What to do about it

  1. Book the stay before the datesWeekends in the color window go first. Pick the house, then plan the days around it.
  2. Go early, not lateThe Middle and Lower Falls overlooks are calm before ten and crowded after. Every one of our stays is close enough to be there for the early light.
  3. Keep the afternoon loosePerry Main Street on a market morning, antiquing up in Mount Morris, and the Greenway rail trail for the day nobody wants another climb.

Four stays

Same park. Pick the house that fits the group.

All four are minutes from Letchworth, all four carry the same $100 code, and every one of them has a fire going by dark.

Bigger group than any one of these? The two West Barn spaces book together as one building that sleeps up to fourteen.

One weekend

Falls in the morning, town in the afternoon, fire after dark.

Saturday early The park

Get to the falls before the parking lot fills.

Three waterfalls sit within a few miles of each other on the Genesee, and the overlooks are yours if you are out the door by nine. The gorge trail between Middle and Upper Falls is the walk to do once, in the cold, with the color overhead.

Hot air balloons launch from the park on clear mornings. Book ahead or watch them from the yard.

Saturday afternoon Perry

Main Street, then whatever the weather allows.

Perry runs a farmers market on Saturday mornings and the end of the season is the good end for it: squash, cider, apples. The Main Street Association calls the town curiously hip and they are not wrong about it.

The Genesee Valley Greenway rail trail runs flat through the valley for the afternoon nobody wants another climb, and Mount Morris is a short drive north for antiquing.

After dark Back at the house

Every one of the four has a fire pit.

Firewood can be stacked before you arrive. At the cabin the hot tub sits out under the trees, at the barn each space has its own fire on the lawn, and at the lake the pit faces the water.

Charcuterie, brunch boxes and full grocery stocking are on the enhancement list at every property, set up before you walk in.

Before you book

The practical part.

When does the color actually peak?

Early to mid October in a normal year, and it shifts with the weather every year. Late autumn after the leaves drop is the underrated version: quieter trails and you can finally see the shape of the gorge.

How close are you to Letchworth State Park?

The West Barn property overlooks the Highbanks of the park, with the Perry entrance a few hundred feet down the hill. The 19A Cabin sits by the west side entrance with its own trail access, and the Silver Lake Haus is a short drive from the gates.

Which property should we book?

Two or four people who want the trails and a hot tub: the cabin. Two or four who want the park view and a soaking tub: Highbanks. Six on a group trip: Southview. Ten to fourteen: the whole barn. Twelve who want water: the Silver Lake Haus.

Can we bring the dog?

The 19A Cabin is the dog-friendly property. Mention the dog when you book, since pet rates vary by stay.

What does it cost?

Rates move with the date, the season, the day of the week and your guest count, so the booking page is the only honest answer. Cleaning fees apply.

What are the house policies?
